Come Along for the Ride
“You like me! You really like me!”
So said Sally Field when she famously accepted her second best actress Oscar for “Places in the Heart.”
Except that she actually didn’t.
But one thing she did say that night – something relevant more than ever in our over-exposed, hot-take-of-the-moment culture – was important for anyone, but especially people who are creative for other people besides themselves.
“I haven’t had an orthodox career, and I’ve wanted more than anything to have your respect.”
But it wasn’t about her. It was about the work.
That was in 1985. Thirty-six years later, respect for the work, not just the source, is arguably more important than ever. Net promoter scores. Five star reviews. Customer testimonials. We’ve all seen them. We’ve all made them.
What does it all really mean?
For us, it’s pretty simple:
You dig what we dig. It’s amazing when you find your tribe. (Our street culture episode celebrates this.)
There’s a there, there. Stories need to take the listener someplace. Quite often we’re along for the ride just like you. We wear Wikipedia and Google out.
Curiosity needs to be fed. We think all our episodes celebrate the wonder created by the interesting stuff that is the fabric of pop culture.
We’ll admit this podcast is a bit of a vanity project. It’s cathartic. And it’s fun. It’s a reason for two friends to talk culture and talk shit. And we thought others might like to join us.
But we also admit that our listeners give us that extra nudge to keep the crazy train rolling. While we’re not creating each episode to gain more subscriptions, we feel your presence in the bar with us. And just like you’d bring a friend to your favorite watering hole, the next time you listen, bring a friend with you.
And if you feel like letting everyone know what you think via an email or review on the listening platform of your choice, that would be amazing. And don’t forget, when you point us to your review and email us your mailing address, an official sticker is in your future.
We just want you to like us. To really like us.
